I finally switched from a cheap pocket knife to a proper carving knife for my wood projects
I was trying to carve a small bird from basswood with a basic folding knife I got years ago, and it was a real fight. Last week, I bought a Flexcut detail knife for about $35, and the difference is night and day. The control and clean cuts I get now are just so much better. Has anyone else made a simple tool switch that completely changed a hobby for them?

It's just a knife though, right? How much better can it really be?

Honestly, Abby has a point. A sharp edge is a sharp edge, and people carved amazing things for centuries with way less. I get that a fancy tool feels nice, but sometimes it's just spending money to fix a skill problem. I used a butter knife to shape a spoon once and it turned out fine, just took longer. The right tool helps, but it's not some magic fix if your hands don't know what they're doing yet.

Butter knives are way too soft for real carving. You'll just roll the edge and make a mess.
