Checked my garden soil pH after 3 years of so-so tomatoes and wished I'd done it sooner
Ngl, I always just threw whatever fertilizer I had on my raised beds and hoped for the best. This spring I finally bought a $15 pH tester from the local nursery and tested the soil in my Pittsburgh plot. Turns out my pH was 5.8 while tomatoes need 6.2 to 6.8, and after adjusting with lime the plants are twice as vigorous. Anyone else put off testing soil because it felt too technical?

Well shoot, three years beats my record - I went five seasons before I tested my soil pH and found out my "tomato bed" was basically a chemistry experiment gone wrong. The best part was telling my neighbor all my gardening advice was based on pure guesswork, but the tomatoes still turned out decent enough that nobody called me out on it. Live and learn, I guess, though I'm still not sure why I thought a $5 bag of generic fertilizer would fix everything.
