Trick for getting old gaskets off without gouging the surface

I spent 2 hours scraping a baked-on carburetor gasket on a Cessna 172 last week, tried a razor blade and a brass scraper, still left marks. A guy at the hangar in Bakersfield told me to use a heat gun on low for 30 seconds first then a plastic putty knife, worked like a charm without damage. Has anyone else had luck with heat over solvent for stubborn gaskets?

Oh yeah, that heat gun trick is a game changer. I did the same thing on an old Mercury outboard carb last month, 30 seconds with a heat gun and the gasket practically peeled off with my fingernails. Your mileage may vary, but I've found it works way better than any solvent I've tried, especially on baked on stuff.

Heat guns can actually warp aluminum if you're not careful, so I'll stick with a good gasket remover spray.
