Older mechanic at our hangar in Detroit showed me something on a Cessna last month I had never seen

I was working on a 172 that had a weird vibration and this guy who's been at it 40 years comes over. He just puts his hand on the cowling in this specific way and says it's a loose baffle seal not the engine. I spent 2 hours checking engine mounts for nothing before he walked by. He does it with his eyes closed almost. Any of you guys ever run into mechanics with weird little tricks like that?

That old timer's trick with the baffle seal is exactly the kind of thing you can't learn from a book. There was a guy at the old FBO in Toledo who could tell a mag timing issue just by the sound of the prop being pulled through by hand. He'd have us adjust it by ear, and the plane would run perfect every time. It's humbling watching someone who's seen it all just work a problem like that.

Totally feel you on that. There is just something about watching someone who has done this stuff for decades, they just have this sixth sense about it. My grandpa was the same way with old tractors, he could walk past one that was running and tell you exactly which cylinder was misfiring just from the sound of it. It is not something you can teach in a class or from a manual, it comes from years of just being hands on and paying attention. Makes me realize how much I still have to learn and how valuable it is to just shut up and watch sometimes.
