My AI voice clone started speaking German during a demo

I was showing a client in Chicago how our new voice synthesis tool works, and it suddenly switched to perfect German for a full minute. I had to reboot the whole system because the language lock setting failed. Has anyone else had an AI model ignore its preset parameters like that?

Our training data at my last job had some German audio files mixed in by accident. The model kept picking up random phrases even after we tried to filter it out. It makes you wonder how much weird stuff is still baked into these systems that we don't know about. I bet your language lock failed because the underlying model has way more languages than the interface lets you pick.

Oh man that's a scary thought. @the_elizabeth is totally right about the hidden languages, it's like an iceberg. We only see the top ten options but the model probably trained on hundreds of random internet scraps. So the "lock" is just a thin layer on top of a messy, mixed up base. No wonder it fails sometimes and weird bits bubble up. We're basically trying to control a huge messy system with a simple on/off switch.

My buddy's smart speaker once started reading recipes in Swedish out of nowhere.
