I was dead set on keeping the original 1950s cabinets in my Nob Hill kitchen, then a neighbor said one sentence
We bought our place near Central and Carlisle 3 years ago and I fought hard to save the original oak cabinets, even with the doors rubbing and one shelf sagging almost 2 inches. My neighbor Sal, who has redone 4 houses on our block, stopped by while I was sanding and asked me one thing: what was I going to do when the new counters were 1.5 inches deeper and the layout shifted anyway? I had not thought past the refinish. Once the walls came open for a $2,300 rewire and we saw the old boxes were built into the plaster, saving them would have cost more than new ones. We went with simple shaker uppers and I have zero regrets after 6 months of cooking in there. Has anyone here actually pulled off keeping 1950s boxes through a full reno, or does the geometry always win?
