I thought travel for gems was a waste until I saw a mine in person

Being there let me check stones under natural light, which changed how I judge quality. Now I see trips as essential for spotting the best pieces.

Wait, you can really see that much of a difference just from natural light? I always figured good lighting was good lighting, but I guess sunlight shows stuff you'd totally miss otherwise.

Seriously @miles_fisher, it's like how you notice every little scratch on your car in the sun. Some things just need that real light to see what's really going on.

Oh absolutely. It's like morning light in my own kitchen, shows every smudge on the windowpane I swore I'd cleaned. There's a plain honesty to sunshine you just can't fake with a bulb. Makes you see the real state of things, good or bad.
