Question about keeping a small punty from sticking too hard

I was making a set of small perfume bottle stoppers last week and kept having the punty snap off too clean, leaving a sharp mark. My usual method of just cooling it a bit wasn't working. On my third try, I remembered something an old timer at the studio in Asheville said offhand once about 'dusting' the punty. I took a tiny pinch of fine silica sand from my bench and just tapped the hot end of the punty rod in it before attaching it to the piece. It created the tiniest bit of texture. It didn't affect the seal while working, but when I tapped it off later, it released perfectly with a clean, smooth break. Has anyone else used a similar trick with something other than sand?

That sand trick is really clever, it makes total sense that a tiny bit of grit would stop that weld from getting too strong. I'm curious about the timing though, like how hot was the punty when you dusted it? And was the sand just sitting out on the bench, or do you keep it in a little dish for this?

Do you think the sand grain size matters, like would coarser grit work better or worse?

Hey @clairen85, what grit are you even using?
