My uncle told me to always bring a real magnet to the creek, not just a cheap one

He said the weak magnets from a dollar store wouldn't pull the magnetite out of the black sand... and after wasting a whole afternoon with a junky fridge magnet, I found a solid chunk with a proper one from my toolbox. What's the best piece of old-school gear advice you've gotten for rock hunting?

My geology professor swore by a simple kitchen strainer for panning. He said half the good stuff gets washed out with fancy gear.

Totally get that. My uncle used to say the same thing about his old colander. He'd find tiny garnets in creek beds that everyone else missed because their screens were too big. Sometimes the simple tool just lets you see what's actually there, you know? Fancy gear can make you feel like you're doing it right, but it might be working against you.

Used to laugh at that... until my cheap magnet failed me.
