I finally understood what an old timer meant about 'listening to the pour'
Back in my first year at the Milwaukee plant, a guy named Frank watched me rush a gray iron pour and said, 'Kid, you're not hearing the song it's singing.' He made me stand there for a full five minutes on the next one, just listening to the metal flow into the flask. Has anyone else had a moment like that where an old trick just clicked?

That's a cool way to put it. Read a thing once about how bakers can tell dough is ready just by the sound it makes when tapped. Makes sense that other trades have those little tells too.

Listening to the song it's singing" is a great line. Sounds like Frank was a real poet with a heat shield. My version of that was learning to smell when the grease was about to go bad in a fryer.
