My dad's advice on fixing old radios was spot on
For a long time, I thought my dad's way of fixing old tube radios was just him being stubborn. He'd always say, 'Just clean the tube pins with a pencil eraser, Miles. It's always the pins.' I'd roll my eyes and look for bigger problems, like bad capacitors or broken wires. Then, about three weeks ago, I was working on a 1950s Zenith table radio from a garage sale in Toledo. It was totally dead. I spent hours checking everything with my multimeter. Finally, I gave up and tried his dumb eraser trick on the 12AX7 tube. The radio crackled to life and played a scratchy big band station. I felt like a fool. His simple fix worked when all my fancy checking did nothing. It made me see that sometimes the old ways are the best ways for these old things. Has anyone else had a simple trick from an older person save a project?

My grandpa swore by a drop of 3-in-1 oil on squeaky fan belts.

My uncle's WD-40 fix for a sticky lock (like @dianahayes' grandpa's oil trick) just saved my back door.
