The old city maps from the 1800s show streams that got buried for development. My neighbor found one under his garage slab, a whole forgotten watercourse. It explains why his sump pump runs nonstop in April, just like @adamk95's uncle's place. You can't drain what's basically a buried creek, you can only try to manage it. Those old surveyors just paved over the problem and left it for us.

How can you even plan for something like that? I used to think a good soil report was enough before any foundation work. This kind of story makes you realize water finds a way no matter what. It completely changed my view on why some older buildings have such weird, ongoing moisture issues. You can do everything right on paper and still get a nasty surprise. Nature doesn't care about your blueprints.

Man, tell me about it. My uncle's place has a basement that floods every spring like clockwork, even after he put in a crazy expensive French drain system. Water just does what it wants.
