Chat with an old timer at the supply house got me second guessing my underlayment choice

Guy who's been laying floor since the 70s told me I'm wasting money on the fancy foam underlayment for click lock vinyl. Said he just uses the cheap 2mm stuff and hasn't had a call back in 20 years in Cleveland. Any of you guys go with the cheap stuff over the premium brands?

You ever try that cheap stuff yourself? I put the bargain basement 2mm under my whole first floor vinyl five years ago and it's still flat as a pancake. No squeaks or seams popping either. That old timer knows what he's talking about.

Heard the same thing from a few guys. @the_miles nailed it.

Lol honestly I think people overthink this stuff way too much. It's a floating floor, not a space shuttle launch. I've used both the expensive stuff and the cheap 2mm and honestly my floors look the same either way. Unless you're installing on a concrete slab with moisture issues or something wild, I doubt the fancy foam makes a real difference. The old timer probably has a point - if 20 years of callbacks don't happen with cheap stuff, you're just paying for marketing hype. But hey, if it makes you sleep better at night, spend the extra cash.
