Wildlife decided to assist with my fence post holes

So I'm digging post holes for a vinyl fence in this backyard with tons of trees. Had my shovel leaning against a tree and went to grab more stakes. Come back to find a whole family of raccoons dragging my shovel towards their den. I yelled and they scattered, but one little guy held on like it was a toy. Ended up in a tug of war with a raccoon over my shovel. Lost my balance and fell into a fresh hole, covered in dirt. The homeowner saw the whole thing from the window and couldn't stop laughing. Had to finish the job with a borrowed shovel from them. Now I never leave tools unattended in wooded areas.

Wait, you actually had a tug of war with the raccoon over the shovel? lmao that's wild, I can't get the picture out of my head. Poor little guy thought he found a new toy. I see what @lee_reed means about wildlife adding to the job, but that's just adding a whole mess.

You said wildlife "assisted" with your holes, but that sounds like the opposite of help. Those raccoons were trying to steal your shovel, not pitch in. You had a tug of war and fell into a hole covered in dirt, which just made more work. The homeowner laughing shows it was a mess, not a helper situation. Your story is about wildlife causing trouble, not lending a hand. Good call on keeping tools close now.

Hollythompson has a point, but wildlife just adds to the job sometimes.
