Hot take: my aunt says our family's chili recipe is 'wrong' without the can of tomato soup my grandpa always added in the 70s.

She argued that the story behind the weird ingredient, which was all he could afford during a tough winter in Duluth, is more important than making a 'correct' chili, and now I'm torn between honoring the memory or updating the recipe for taste.

So which one tastes better, the soup version or the updated one?

Honestly young.kim, the soup version is way overrated. The updated one has more flavor and better texture. I'd pick the new version every time.

Sometimes the story in the bowl matters more than perfect flavor. We hold onto weird family traditions because they connect us to people, not just recipes. Would the chili even feel like your grandpa's without that soup?
