Just realized my old route shortcut was costing me time

My delivery van's GPS kept rerouting me around a closed bridge on Maple Street last week, adding 15 minutes each loop. I finally pulled over, looked at a paper map, and saw a service road that wasn't on the digital system. Anyone else have a go-to trick when tech fails you on the road?

Read an article once about how delivery companies in really old cities have to train new drivers on the "paper map run" before they trust them with GPS. Places like Boston or Savannah with all the one-way streets and dead ends that apps just get wrong. The veterans all know which alleyways actually connect and which historic squares you can cut through. Tech's great until it sends you down a cobblestone path meant for horse carriages.

Yeah, always keep a local trucker atlas in the glove box. Those show all the industrial and service roads the apps miss. Saved my butt more than once.

My GPS tried to take me down a "road" in Philly that was basically a set of old stone stairs. @nancy817 is right, the trucker atlas showed it was a footpath for the last hundred years. The apps just see a line between two streets and send you. Had to back down an alley for half a block.
