Finally got the governor rope tension right on that old Otis unit downtown

Kept seeing guys crank it way too tight, thinking it helps the safety catch. Watched a unit in the Jefferson building fail its test because the rope was binding. Spent an hour with the manual and a tension gauge, got it set to the book spec of 45 pounds. The test run was smooth as glass. How do you all handle governor adjustments on pre-90s models?

Man, I learned that lesson the hard way, back when I thought tighter was always better.

Yeah, that's a tough one to unlearn. I was the same way for a long time, always cranking things down. Actually seeing something fail because it was too tight, that was the real wake up call. It just doesn't leave any room for things to move or breathe. Now I go for snug and it always works out better.

My buddy's old unit seized up for the same reason last year.
