Shoutout to the guy who suggested a 60/40 leaded solder for that finicky 1990s game console board

I was stuck between using my usual lead-free stuff or hunting down the old school mix, and after a quick trip to the hardware store for a $12 roll, the joints flowed perfectly on the first try, so what's your go-to solder for vintage gear repairs?

You spent $12 on a roll of solder?

That $12 roll is a bargain compared to the time it saves. I keep a roll of 63/37 on hand just for old circuit boards. The lower melting point means less chance of lifting a trace on a fragile 30 year old motherboard. Lead free solder just doesn't behave the same on that old plating.

Check the date codes on your boards before you start. Some early 90s stuff has terrible plating that just falls apart. A good flux pen helps more than anything.
