Swapped my old bird feeder for a tray feeder last month and it changed everything

I used to hang a tube feeder with perches, but all I got was finches and the occasional chickadee. Then I switched to a simple platform tray near my window, and now I'm seeing doves, sparrows, and even a blue jay showing up at dawn. Has anyone else had a specific feeder style make a big difference in what birds visit?

Did your buddy have to move the tray every day to keep the squirrels out?

@nora110 moving a tray every day sounds like way too much work for some squirrels.

Yes, moving a tray every day does sound like a lot of work for squirrels! In my experience, I found a similar thing when I swapped from a tube feeder to a flat wooden tray stuffed with sunflower seeds. It just opened up feeding for bigger birds like cardinals who never bothered with the tube, and the cleanup is way easier too.
