Had to patch a ceiling in a 1920s house in Pasadena and the plaster was crumbling like old cake

I mean, I went through three bags of setting compound just to get a solid base before I could even think about tape. Anyone else have a go-to method for dealing with that kind of mess?

Yeah, that "building on sand" feeling... my buddy had to basically wire mesh over a whole section that just kept falling out in chunks.

Oh man, "crumbling like old cake" is the perfect way to put it. I've been there. My go-to is to scrape out all the loose stuff until you're hitting solid edges, then I use a bonding agent brushed on the old plaster before the first coat of mud. It helps it stick to that dusty mess so you're not just building on sand. That stuff is a lifesaver for old houses.

Honestly, what bonding agent do you actually use for that?
