TIL that old timer's advice about running the pump dry was bad news
Guy named Frank at the marina told me I could let the dredge pump run dry for a few minutes to clear a clog. Cost me $400 for a new seal and gasket replacement after just one try.

Heard that. Reminds me of the time I took my dad's old lawnmower apart because the blade was stuck. He kept telling me to just pour some gas down the carburetor and give it a yank. I followed his advice and flooded the whole engine. Ended up having to replace the carburetor and the air filter. Took me three hours and a lot of cussing. Sometimes the old ways are just bad ways.

Spent a whole Saturday once trying to fix my grandpa's old drill by banging it against the workbench like he always did. Ended up cracking the casing and had to buy a whole new one. @milacraig your dad and my grandpa must have gone to the same school of "just hit it harder" maintenance. Some tricks just don't age well, do they?

Read an article once that said running any pump dry basically turns the seal into a friction cutter. Sounds like Frank was stuck in the 70s or something.
