Stop running the cutterhead too fast in sand - you're just churning water

Buddy of mine tried that on a job in Louisiana and the old-timer running the barge next to him laughed his ass off. Said he was pulling more sand per hour at idle than my friend was at full bore.

Did you ever try that trick where you back off the throttle and let the cutterhead just barely tick over in soft sand? I was out on the gulf coast last summer with a guy who had this old dredge setup, and he swore by running it at half speed in the muck. Said it kept the solids from getting all washed out and made the slurry way thicker. His whole operation was janky, but he ended up pulling more material in a day than I did with my full throttle approach. You running a jet or a plain suction setup?
