Sitting by the river today, I thought about how we found depth before tech

I was watching the current swirl around some rocks. It made me recall using simple poles to feel for the bottom (no fancy gadgets back then). Is there value in teaching those old methods to apprentices?

Those poles teach a feel tech can't replace.

My grandpa taught me to fish with a simple cane pole when I was ten. That hands-on time built an understanding of the water no gadget could match. Some skills just need to be felt, not downloaded.

Gadgets can help beginners understand depth faster, but they should learn the feel too. Balance is key for real skill.
