Prevented a pump seizure by actually looking at the bearings for once.
That extra minute of checking saved a full day of repairs.

What if that whine was masking a worse safety hazard?

Ever see someone skip the small check and pay for it big time? My buddy (who works maintenance at a plant) kept hearing a faint whine from a blower motor but blew it off for weeks. He finally looked when the sound got really bad, and the bearings were completely fried. It had already wrecked the shaft seals, so what could have been a simple bearing swap turned into a whole motor rebuild and two days of lost production. He definitely learned that the weird noise is always worth the five minutes to look.
