Finally got the hang of reading the river bottom on the Ohio job

Three years ago on the Mississippi, I was just guessing based on the pump sound. Last month, I started watching the pressure gauge swings more closely, and last week on the Ohio near Cincinnati, I called a shift from sand to clay before the sample even came up. What's your best trick for knowing what you're cutting into before you see it?

Pressure gauges lie, trust the sample.

Listen to the pump hum change, not the gauge. That low thrum on clay is totally different from sand's higher pitch.

Sounds like you're trying to diagnose the soil with your ears. Honestly, just wait until you hit a rock.
