Blew a hydraulic hose on a job in Biloxi last month

I was dredging a marina channel near the casinos when a 1-inch return line let go at 6 AM. Lost about 12 gallons of oil before I could shut down the pump. Anyone had luck with those field-repairable hose fittings vs just carrying spare hoses?

You got 12 gallons out before you shut it down? How long did it take you to realize it blew?

Actually 12 gallons sounds like a lot but it really depends on how fast it was pumping. Most sump pumps push 20-30 gallons per minute so that could be only 20-30 seconds of run time before you catch it. The real question is how high the water got before you shut it down because that's what matters for damage. In my experience a lot of people don't realize their pump is running for much longer than they think because they aren't watching it the whole time. You could be standing right there and still miss the first few gallons if you're not paying close attention. Take this with a grain of salt but I'd say 12 gallons is actually pretty good reaction time depending on the setup.

Consider with @morgan_martinez that maybe the real issue is whether the pump float switch got stuck and caused the overflow.
