A hostel owner in Cusco told me to stop booking beds, start booking rooms

I used to pick the cheapest dorm bed everywhere and figured that was the nomad way. Then this guy who runs a place in Cusco looked at my budget and said "you spend $12 on a bed but $8 on coffee and wifi, that math is backwards." He showed me a private room for $18 that had a desk, real lock, and quiet hours, so I worked faster and stopped renting coworking space. Last 3 cities I switched to private rooms and my monthly lodging went up $90 but my workspace spending dropped $240. Turns out the feedback was about valuing my output, not my savings. Anyone else get a piece of advice that flipped their cost breakdown like that?

That "math is backwards" line hit me hard too. I had the same setup, cheap bed plus daily cafe rent for wifi and power, and I never added it up until someone pointed it out. Once I switched to a private room with a desk, I stopped buying $6 lattes just to justify sitting somewhere, and my actual work hours went up while my spending went down.
