Warning: spent 8 months color grading on a laptop screen that was straight up lying to me
Bought a $40 monitor calibrator after a print shop in Austin said all my skin tones looked flat and orange, and now I'm wondering how many pieces I wrecked because I trusted the factory settings out of the box.

That print shop basically did you a FAVOR, because most of us never find out our screens are lying until a client says something looks off. The real kicker is that cheap calibrators are not just for fixing color, they keep it from drifting over time, so it is a one time save that keeps saving you. Factory settings are set to look pretty in a showroom, not to tell you the truth about your files.
