Update: Someone said my character art looked 'flat'...
They pointed out I was only using one light source in all my work. I started adding a second, softer rim light from behind and it made a huge difference in making things feel 3D. Anyone else get a piece of feedback that made you change a basic habit?

Flat" art feedback made me finally learn about ambient occlusion.

So, is that why my art looks like a coloring book page?

That "flat" feedback is the best thing that can happen to an artist. It forces you to learn how light actually works in a space, not just on an object. Ambient occlusion is that basic glue that makes stuff look like it belongs in a scene. Skipping it is like building a model and forgetting to put it on a base. Once you see it, you can't unsee it, and your work instantly gets more real.
