I thought AI upscaling digital art was cheating until a gallery owner in Portland asked me what software I used
Six months ago I would have rolled my eyes at anyone running a digital painting through an upscaler, because I spent 10 years doing cleanup passes by hand and it felt like a shortcut. Then a gallery owner in Portland looked at my 8000 pixel print and asked if I had used Gigapixel, and when I fessed up that I had, she just nodded and said the edges held up better than most of the hand-detailed stuff on her wall. That threw me, because I had always assumed any automated tool would smear the brush texture or turn fine linework into mush. So I ran my own test, same file twice, one upscaled and one redrawn, printed both at 24 by 36 on the same paper, and hung them side by side in my studio. The upscaled one had cleaner hatching through the shadows and zero banding, while my manual version had that slight wobble in the mid tones I never noticed before. I still redraw faces and focal points by hand because that is where it falls apart, but for background texture and wide shots it saved me roughly 14 hours on one piece. Anyone else here using upscalers on finished illustrations, and if so what size do you print before the artifacts start to show?
