Watched a guy in Lubbock torque a head by feel and it held, made me rethink my whole routine
Stopped at a small independent shop outside Lubbock last week to grab a used injection pump and the owner was buttoning up a 5.9 Cummins for a customer. He skipped the torque wrench on the head bolts and went by feel, said he's done it that way for 22 years on these motors. I about lost it watching him, but the truck fired up clean and the guy drove off. I've been using spec and a wrench for 15 years, so now I'm second guessing if I'm just being stubborn. Anyone here ever run into an old timer who dead nuts a torque sequence by hand and had it actually work?
Did he say anything about how he checks them after, like a retorque at 500 miles or just send it? That's the part that would bug me, because feel can get you close on a fresh gasket but it says nothing about what happens after a few heat cycles. What torque did he claim his arm was hitting, or did he not even put a number on it?
