Was ready to call the diesel purge snake oil, but the injector chatter in my 7.3 told me otherwise
I'd always figured those pour-in fuel additives were a waste of money, just marketing in a bottle. A guy I know from the shop over in Amarillo swore by a diesel purge treatment on a high-mile 7.3 Powerstroke he picked up with 287,000 on the clock. It had a rough idle and that injector clatter you can hear from ten feet away, and he said one can through the fuel filter housing smoothed it out in about 20 minutes. I didn't buy it, so he let me try it on my own truck, a 2001 with 244,000. Halfway through the can the idle cleaned right up and that rattle dropped to a hum I hadn't heard since I bought the thing. I'm not saying it fixes worn injectors, but for 14 bucks it told me a lot about where my real problem was. Now I'm wondering how many of these trucks get injectors swapped when all they needed was a good cleaning. Any of you run purge treatments as a regular thing, or just when something acts up?
