Saw a shop in Tulsa running a drum of used oil through a sock filter, is that normal?

Was picking up a used air compressor off Craigslist last weekend and the guy had a whole operation going in his backyard. He was pouring used motor oil through what looked like an old athletic sock stretched over a 5 gallon bucket, then dumping it straight into his truck's fuel tank. I asked him how long he's been doing it and he said 3 years with no issues, but that sock was black as coal and had holes in it. Has anyone here actually tried filtering waste oil like this, or is this dude just begging for an injector failure?
