Fuel pump ate itself at 3am outside of Bakersfield

Last Tuesday I was hauling a load of produce down the 58 and the Cummins started stumbling around mile 47. Pulled over, checked the filters, then realized the lift pump was pushing metal shavings. Had to call a mobile mechanic who charged me $780 just for the tow and diagnosis, then ate another $400 in parts. Anyone else had a CP3 go bad with less than 250k on the clock? I thought those were supposed to be the bulletproof ones.

Shook my head reading this because 250k is nothing for a CP3. Those pumps should go double that easy if the fuel system stays clean. Sounds like you got the bad luck of the draw, or maybe some dirty fuel from a questionable stop along the way. That $780 for tow and diagnosis stings, I know the feeling all too well from my own rig troubles. Hope the new pump treats you better, and maybe worth checking your injection lines for any leftover metal before you fire it back up. That stuff gets everywhere and can take out the injectors next.
