Can we talk about the 2019 Duramax that ate 6 injectors in 4 days at my bay in Boise?
Two weeks ago I had a truck come in on a Tuesday for a rough idle, and by Friday I had pulled the cab twice and replaced six injectors on a 2019 Duramax with only 61k miles on it. What made that week so bad was that the first set of injectors I put in were remans from a supplier I had trusted for 8 years, and 3 of them failed within 20 miles of the test drive. I had to eat the labor both times because the customer was already hot about the downtime, and I was out about $1,400 in parts and a whole Saturday. The thing that finally tipped me off was a tiny bit of glitter in the fuel filter housing that I almost wrote off as normal wear. Turns out the CP4 pump was shedding, and every new injector I dropped in was getting chewed up from the inside out. I pulled the tank, found rust scale the size of a dime, and the whole fuel system had to come apart. If you see even a speck of metal in the filter canister on one of these, do not just swap injectors and send it. What are you all using to test for CP4 contamination before you commit to a full fuel system job?
