The lady at the grocery store who counted my change back to me like I was 10 years old

Last Tuesday at the Piggly Wiggly I handed the cashier a $20 for a $13.47 order and she slowly counted the change into my palm coin by coin while looking me dead in the eye. Has anyone else had someone treat them like they can't do basic math after a certain age?

28 years working customer service and I've had to count change back to grown adults who stared at me like I was speaking a foreign language. She probably just had some college kid that morning hand her a fifty for a pack of gum and cry about not getting the right change back.

Grown adults who stared at me like I was speaking a foreign language" is the most accurate description of retail I've ever heard. I swear some people short circuit the second you ask for exact change or try to hand back their coins. Like, I'm not asking you to solve a math problem, I'm just trying to give you your money back. The number of times someone just stares at a pile of change like it's alien technology is honestly kind of funny. It's not that hard to just hand it over and walk away. People really need to work on their basic social skills at the register.

Man I feel you. My rule of thumb is to just hold my hand out flat, palm up, and let them drop it all at once instead of taking it piece by piece. Speed things up by having the exact change ready or saying "that's fine" before they even start. If they still go slow, just give a little nod and say "yep I got it" while scooping the coins into your pocket. Works every time.
