Vent: the thrift store lamp I traded my good bookshelf for started smoking on night 3
I traded my solid oak bookshelf to a guy in the Fair Oaks parking lot two Saturdays ago for a floor lamp he said was "basically new." I was downsizing anyway and he seemed nice, so I didn't even plug it in before we loaded it into my truck. Night 3, I'm reading in my chair and it starts buzzing, then the shade actually smokes and the switch won't flip off. I had to yank the cord out of the wall and now there's a scorch mark on my outlet plate. My neighbor checked it out and said the wiring inside was cloth wrapped, so this thing is probably from the 60s and never got looked at. My bookshelf is gone, the lamp is in my alley, and I'm out a shelf and a lamp. Has anyone else gotten burned (not literally, hopefully) trading for something the other person swore was fine?
Oof, cloth wrapped wiring is wild, that thing could've burned your whole place down. Honestly this is why my broke self just reads by the light of my fridge now.
