I skipped the "free" pile at my neighbor's yard sale and I still feel weird about it
Two Saturdays ago on Maple Street, a guy named Dave set out a box marked FREE that had a barely used Keurig and about 20 unopened K-cups, and I walked right past it because I already own a coffee maker. He called out "you sure? It works fine" and I just waved and kept going. My unpopular take is that taking free stuff you will not actually use is worse for the swap community than leaving it, so did I do the right thing or was I just being rude?
That wave you gave Dave was probably the most honest thing you did all day. I get why it still nags at you though. A Keurig plus 20 pods is real value, and turning it down can feel like slapping a gift away. But here is the thing: if you take it home and it sits in your closet, it is not really being saved, it is just being moved. The next person who actually wants a Keurig now has to go buy one instead of getting Dave's. You did Dave a favor too, because that machine stayed out front a bit longer for someone who needed it. Leaving stuff you will not use is not rude, it is the whole point of a free pile.
