Why does nobody talk about how bad a cheap wood burning pen is for lettering
I picked up a $15 wood burning pen at a craft store in Dayton last winter and tried to letter a small sign for my sister's porch, and the tip wobbled so bad my lines looked like a kid drew them. I kept reading online that you just need practice, but after 4 tries on scrap pine I could feel the heat shifting and no amount of practice was going to fix it. Borrowed a friend's fixed-temp burner with a real solid tip and my lettering came out clean on the first pass, so it was the tool and not me. If you're doing letters on pine, check whether the tip actually sits tight in the pen before you blame your hands. What burner do you all use for small lettering, and does a fixed temp really beat a dial one for you?
