Found out I was brushing my teeth wrong for 28 years and my dentist in Boise caught it
I brush twice a day and floss maybe 4 times a week, so I figured my routine was fine. Then last Tuesday my dentist in Boise poked around for a minute and asked if I scrub back and forth like a saw. I said yeah, that's how I was taught in 3rd grade. She told me that motion wears a groove into the gums and showed me a mirror so I could see the notch above my right canine. Now I hold the brush at a 45 degree angle and make tiny circles, which feels slow and weird. Has anyone else switched techniques this late and did it stick, or am I going to drift back to sawing in a week?
Ouch, that notch sounds rough but at least she caught it now instead of ten years down the line. Fixing a habit you've had since 3rd grade is no joke, your hand just wants to go back to what it knows. Try slowing way down for the first couple weeks and keeping the brush on one tooth at a time, that helped me stop drifting back to the saw motion.
