Pro tip: overheard a vet tech say something scary about retractable leashes

I was at the pet store and heard a vet tech telling someone she sees 3-4 dogs a month with neck injuries from those retractable leashes. She said the thin cord can slice right through skin if it gets wrapped around a leg. I switched to a standard 6-foot leash the next day, anyone else ditch theirs?

Oh great, so those leashes are basically cheese graters for dogs? Guess I'll stick with the boring old rope that doesn't double as a weapon. Pretty wild that something marketed as "convenient" can turn a walk into a trip to the vet.

The cord can definitely do some damage if it gets tangled up, which is scary for such a common item. That neck injury statistic is pretty eye-opening since most people just think they're a convenience thing. Swapping to a standard leash is the easiest way to avoid those risks completely.
