Hit 500 miles walked with my dog Rufus this year and the app notification made me tear up a little
I started tracking our walks back in January mostly to see if Rufus was actually getting enough exercise since he's a 9 year old lab mix with achy hips. The app pinged me last Tuesday on our usual loop around Miller Park that we crossed 500 miles for the year, which works out to about 2.7 miles a day. What got me was looking at the map and seeing all the little side streets and trails we found just because Rufus wanted to sniff something. He can't do the long hikes anymore but he still pulls me toward the same fire hydrant on Oak Street like it's brand new every time. Any of you tracking your walks, and does the number actually mean anything to you or is it just fun to watch it climb?
I used to roll my eyes at people who got mushy over step counts, figured it was just a number on a screen. Then my vet told me my old girl Sadie needed shorter, more frequent walks for her joints, and suddenly those daily totals were the only way I could tell if I was doing right by her. Watching the miles pile up stopped being about the number and started being about all the slow mornings and sniff stops I would have rushed past before. Your thing with the fire hydrant on Oak Street got me, that kind of routine is its own little reward.
