TIL my train route had a faster transfer this whole time, found out by accident

For two years I took the 7:42 express into the city and always switched at Jackson. Last Wednesday the platform was shut down, so I had to ride one more stop to Union. Turns out there is a direct cross-platform walk there that saves me about 12 minutes every morning. I only figured it out because a station worker pointed me that way when I looked lost. Now I get to work early enough to grab coffee before my first meeting, which has never happened before. Has anyone else discovered a random detour that turned out to be better than their normal route?
