Overheard a guy on the bus talking about a shortcut that nearly got him fired

I was on the 42 bus last Tuesday and this guy was telling his friend about a back road he used to skip traffic by the mall. He said it added 15 minutes to his drive but saved him from sitting still, so he figured it was fine. His boss found out because a coworker saw him and ratted him out, now he's on probation for unauthorized travel routes. I guess companies really track your commute if you drive a work vehicle. Has anyone else had a work commute rule bite them like that?

yeah actually that's not really a shortcut if it added 15 minutes, thats just a different route. i get why his boss was mad though, work vehicles usually have gps trackers and log everything for insurance reasons. honestly he should have just asked if there was an approved alternate route before doing it on his own.

Bet the boss was just covering his own ass with the insurance company.

Hold on, GPS trackers on work vehicles are usually for routing and hours logging, not insurance coverage in general. The boss was probably more worried about the extra mileage and time than the insurance company.
