My brother's shortcut advice cost me 40 extra minutes in Tacoma traffic

My brother swore if I skipped the I-5 exit and took the back roads through Ruston Way, I'd shave off the worst of the afternoon backup. He said he did it every day for a year and never got stuck. Tried it last Tuesday and hit three school zones, a freight train crossing, and a funeral procession that crawled for five miles. Ended up pulling into my driveway 40 minutes later than if I'd just sat in the usual jam. Has anyone else been led astray by a relative's supposedly foolproof route?
