My 74 year old dad got scammed out of $400 and the thing that got him wasn't tech, it was a phone call
My dad called me Tuesday night from his place in Tampa, kind of quiet, and told me he gave his credit card number to a guy who said he was from the fraud department at his bank. The guy knew the last 4 digits of his card. He knew his address. He even knew the name of the small credit union my dad has used for 20 years, which is a 3 branch operation that most people have never heard of. My dad said the guy sounded like a nice young man and kept saying 'sir' and told him there was a $1,200 charge in Ohio that they needed to block right away. Here is the part that got me. I have bugged my dad for years about passwords and never reuse them and turn on two factor, and he does all of it. He is honestly better about that stuff than I am. But none of it mattered because the guy just called him and asked nicely and made him scared for about 90 seconds. I sat with him and we set up a rule that the bank will never call about fraud, he calls them, using the number on his card, every single time, no exceptions. Has anyone here gotten an older parent to actually stick to a rule like that, or do they just drift back to being polite to strangers on the phone?
