That one guy at the flea market who changed how I store my old keys
I was at the Rose Bowl flea market last Sunday, digging through a box of random keys and locks, when this older collector named Hank pointed at my bag and said, "You're keeping those in a coffee can, aren't you?" He was right, and he showed me his system of labeled zip pouches for each era of his key collection. I went home and spent 4 hours sorting 200 keys into old coin envelopes, writing dates and locations on each one. Has anyone else found that the way you store a collection actually makes you look at it differently? I'm curious if other people got that same kick from a random stranger's advice.

Honestly I think Hank talked you into making extra work for yourself. Those keys were fine in the coffee can, they were honest and easy to grab when you needed one. Now you gotta unzip a pouch, find the right envelope, slide the key out, check the little handwriting... it's like doing taxes every time you want to open a lock. Storing things better just makes you think about the mess you have, not the keys themselves. Plus now you probably feel guilty if you ever drop one back in the wrong pouch, and that guilt is the real change, not some new way of seeing your collection.
