Shoutout to the coin shop guy in Tulsa who spotted my cleaned pennies
I brought in about 40 wheat pennies last month thinking I had a nice little starter set, and the guy behind the counter took one look and asked if I had rubbed them with baking soda. Turns out I had been scrubbing my coins with a paste for years because a blog post I read back in 2019 made them look shiny and new. He pulled out a loupe and showed me the tiny scratches all over the fields, and said that shine actually knocked the value down by half or more. Now I have a jar of dull brown pennies I refuse to touch, and I am scared to even breathe on them. Has anyone else messed up a whole batch like this before they knew better?
