PSA: character backstory worksheets are holding back your drafts
I talked to my buddy Dave from the local critique circle in Austin last Tuesday, he mentioned he spends 2 hours filling out those 40 question character sheets before writing a single scene. He said it feels like homework, not discovery, and that stuck with me because I used to do the same thing. Turns out the best arcs in our group came from writers who just wrote a rough scene and figured out the person as they went. Is anyone else ditching the questionnaires and letting the story tell you who the character is? Has anyone else dealt with writers block that got worse after pre planning too much?
