I thought writing prompts had to be dark to work, until a 6 year old at my library reading group fixed my whole story
I ran a free writing group at the East Liberty library in Pittsburgh every Tuesday, and my prompts were always heavy stuff like 'write about a loss' or 'someone disappears.' Last month I handed out a prompt about a kid who finds a locked door, and a 6 year old named Marcus asked why the door had to be scary, so I let him add 'and there's a puppy behind it.' Twelve people wrote that night, the most I'd ever gotten, and every single story was better than my grim versions. Now I hand out one dark prompt and one silly one and let the room pick. What's the weirdest prompt swap that ever saved your group?
